The Most Flavorful Crock Pot Sweet Hawaiian Chicken Recipe
I've always loved sweet, spicy, and savory flavors mixed with chicken, and this sweet Hawaiian chicken made in the crockpot has just that. The homemade sauce has a depth of flavor, while the veggies complement the chicken. I serve it over white rice for a complete meal.
This seriously is one of my favorite crockpot chicken recipes, right next to my crockpot chicken leg quarters with crispy skin. They're both so delicious!
Another thing I love is how the slow cooker does most of the work, making it a low-effort meal that's still terrific. You could even prep some elements of this recipe the night before to make the process even quicker.
Ingredients Needed
Don't be intimidated by the amount of ingredients needed in this recipe. As you'll see, the majority of them are ingredients that you might already have at home. If not, picking them up fresh from the grocery store is well worth it.
Check out what you'll need:
- 2 chicken breasts
- 1 onion no dig buddy
- 1 red bell pepper
- 1 yellow bell pepper
- 3 garlic cloves
- 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- ¼ cup BBQ sauce
- 2 teaspoon sesame oil
- 20 oz can of pineapple
- ¼ cup orange juice
- 2 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 green onions, sliced
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
How to Make Sweet Hawaiian Crockpot Chicken
Step 1: Add Chicken and Vegetables
Spray your slow cooker with non-stick spray. Add the cubed chicken, season with salt and pepper, then layer in the onion, bell peppers, and pineapple chunks.
Step 2: Mix and Add the Sauce
In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, BBQ sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and pineapple juice. Pour this over the chicken and vegetables, stirring gently to coat.
Step 3: Slow Cook
Cook on low heat for 3 hours or until the chicken is tender and can be easily shredded with two forks. The veggies should be tender too.
Step 4: Thicken the Sauce
In a bowl, mix orange juice with cornstarch to make a slurry. Stir this into the slow cooker and cook, uncovered, for an additional 30 minutes until the sauce thickens.
Step 5: Serve and Garnish
Top with sliced green onions and sesame seeds, then serve over rice or with your favorite side.
My Expert Tips For The Best Sweet Hawaiian Chicken
- Choose fresh ginger and garlic: Fresh ingredients add more robust flavors than dried, especially with slow cooking.
- Avoid lifting the lid frequently: Keeping the lid on helps maintain the heat and cooking time in the crockpot.
- Use chicken thighs if you want to add more flavor.
- Add more veggies like carrots or snap peas for extra color and texture.
- Cut the veggies the night before, so all you have to do is toss everything in the slow cooker. This makes the process super convenient!
How To Store Leftover Hawaiian Chicken
If you don't finish all of this sweet Hawaiian chicken with veggies and rice, you can store everything in an airtight container in the fridge for three days or in the freezer for a few months.
To reheat, either put the chicken, veggies, and sauce in a pan on the stovetop over low heat for a few minutes or microwave in 30-second increments.
