Healthier Chicken Wings with All The Flavor!
I love wings.
To be honest, I could eat deep fried chicken wings every day. Buuuuut, deep fried wings aren't exactly the healthiest.
That's what makes these crispy oven baked chicken wings so great! They have all the incredible flavor and crispiness of fried wings, but they are baked in the oven so they are lower in fat and calories.
If that's not enough, they are also coated in an incredible seasoning mix that's just downright addicting. More on that in a minute though.
Ingredients for Baked Whole Chicken Wings
- 1 lb. whole chicken wings - Whole wings comprise the tip, the drummette, and the mid-joint. This is a little different from party wings which have the tip removed.
- Seasonings -This is where all that delicious flavor is going to come from. For my dry rub, I like to use ⅓ teaspoon onion powder, ⅓ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon Italian herbs, ½ teaspoon brown sugar, ⅓ teaspoon smoked paprika, ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper, and salt and ground black pepper (to taste).
- 1 tablespoon olive oil - To help the seasoning stick.
How to Make Baked Whole Chicken Wings
Step 1. Prepare your oven. The secret to crispy baked wings is making sure your oven is nice and hot before you cook the wings.
So, you'll want to preheat your oven to 450°F while you prepare the chicken and the seasonings, and it'll be ready to go.
Step 2. Prepare the seasoning mixture. In a large bowl, combine the salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, Italian herbs, paprika, and cayenne pepper. Make sure they are all nicely mixed.
Step 3. Coat the chicken wings. Next, add olive oil to the spice mixture, add the chicken wings, and stir them around.
If you only have a small bowl, you may need to do each chicken wing one at a time to make sure the wings are completely coated.
Step 4. Cook chicken wings. Arrange the wings on a large baking sheet and bake for 35-40 minutes or until the chicken skin is crispy.
Step 5. Serve and enjoy. Pat dry with paper towels to remove excess oil and serve warm. Enjoy!
What to Serve With Baked Whole Chicken Wings
I usually keep it simple and snack on these delicious wings with some celery sticks and some blue cheese. But occasionally I'll make a complete meal out of them by pairing them with a large salad, some baked potatoes, or mac and cheese.
By the way, these wings are also really great coated in some sauce. If you love buffalo wings, then buffalo sauce goes great with these oven baked wings, but you can also go with BBQ sauce, garlic parm sauce, cajun, mango habanero, and more.
Tips to Make the Best Recipe
The secret to success with this recipe is getting the wings crispy yet still keeping them juicy.
My number one tip for getting these oven baked wings as crispy as possible is to line a baking sheet with parchment paper - or aluminum foil - and then place the chicken wings on a wire rack on top of the paper/foil. This will allow excess liquid from the wings to drip down giving you an even crisp!
The best way to keep the wings juicy is not to overcook them. I use a meat thermometer and check the internal temperature of the wings often. Once they reach an internal temperature of 165°F, they'll be ready to go!
Storing and Reheating Instructions
In the fridge: If you have any leftover chicken wings (never a problem in my house), allow them to cool and then store them in the fridge in an airtight container. Then, just make sure to eat within 3-4 days.
In the freezer: To freeze leftovers, allow the chicken wings to cool and then transfer them to an airtight container - or a freezer-safe bag. Eat them within 4 months.
Reheating: To reheat your wings, put them back on a baking tray and place them back in the oven for around 15 minutes at 350°F. They should take around 15 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Cook These Chicken Wings in an Air Fryer?
Air frying wings is a great alternative to oven baking and is just as healthy! I recommend air frying them at 400°F for around 40 minutes (flipping them halfway through).
Can I Use Other Cuts of Chicken?
Chicken legs and thighs also work great for this recipe. You can also use the same seasoning for chicken breasts.
Can I Add Baking Powder to the Recipe?
Some people like to add a little baking powder because it helps the chicken get extra crispy. As long as your oven is nicely preheated, you should be fine without the baking powder, but there is no harm in adding a little if you like.
